The Duncan Nderiru Ndegwa Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to become an Agent of Hope to a wonderful world by building stronger communities and noticeably transforming lives positively. Our purpose statement is to nurture hope and future opportunities for young people by providing access to quality education and fostering socio-education in culture and heritage for a broader audience. Our four pivotal pillars for holistic prosperity are Education, Family, Health, and Wealth. We foster love, champion peace and unity, safeguard moral values, uphold social justice, and celebrate the diversification of our rich culture and heritage.
Duncan Ndegwa, born in 1925 in Giathathi village, Nyeri County, is a distinguished individual with a rich academic journey. He completed his early education at Wamagana and Ngangarithi before progressing to Kagumo and Alliance high school for his O- and A-Levels. Subsequently, he pursued higher education in the United States and Canada. Through a Government Merit Scholarship, he earned a Master of Arts (Hons) in Economics and History from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, graduating in 1956. Mr. Ndegwa embarked on a civil service career upon returning to Kenya, contributing his skills and knowledge to his nation.
He deeply cherishes family values, alongside his wife, Mrs. Ann Ndegwa, raising four children who continue to uphold his legacy. As he enjoys the blessings of age and witnesses his second and third generations, he remains dedicated to the betterment of society.
The Duncan Nderitu Ndegwa Foundation, founded by Mr. Ndegwa and his family, is rooted in the belief that life is beautiful, and the strength of community can be harnessed to pool resources for the greater good. These foundational principles underpin the Foundation’s efforts to address critical social, economic, and environmental challenges within Kenyan communities, with unity and justice at the forefront.
The Nyeri Educational Trust (NET) is committed to supporting high-achieving students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who struggle to meet the financial requirements for their secondary education. The NET program, initiated in 2000 under the Form 1 Link program, has already benefited over 2,000 students. This initiative was inspired by the observation that many high-achieving students in the Nyeri area failed to enroll in Form One or dropped out within the first year due to financial constraints, exacerbated by setbacks in coffee production, land subdivision, and the HIV-AIDS pandemic. Although government tuition fees were waived in 2008, secondary school requirements such as boarding fees and activity fees remained a challenge for many students.
NET is dedicated to ensuring that these deserving and bright children not only join secondary school but also remain there, thus their appeal for support. The Foundation aims to expand this initiative to have a more profound impact on the lives of deserving children, encouraging them to realize their God-given talents.
Mr. Duncan Nderitu Ndegwa holds the esteemed position of “Muramati” (Steward) of culture and heritage within the Agikuyu community, symbolizing his commitment to uniting African communities. The Foundation plans to establish a Kwanyaga Cultural and Heritage Center on land donated by the Founder’s family. This center aims to rekindle and renew the foundations of language, culture, and heritage, especially among GEMA communities. Through this initiative, we can gain a deeper appreciation of our origins and our path to greatness. We can also understand the various rites of passage toward a more equitable and God-intended life where everyone is valued equally.
